"ESDGC is education that will prepare young people for life in the 21st century... it is more than a body of knowledge as is it about values and attitudes, understanding and skills." (DCELLS, 2008)
But what does ESDGC stand for?
ESDGC stands for: Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship.
'ESDGC' is a new development into the new Welsh curriculum and as the name describes is present to teach children about sustainable development and global citizenship. This includes factors and issues within our culture from the past, present and future. DCELLS (2008) a document for the Welsh Assembly Government explains it as: The relationship we and every citizen on earth has with "Society, economy and environment" and the relationship that Human rights, resources and power have with each other. 'ESDGC' is also about how our actions can have massive impacts upon the world and everyone in it, in acknowledgement of global issues. This is similar to a PSE (Personal and Social education) as it is mainly focused upon educating children how to be a responsive and intelligent citizen in the present and for the future.
'ESDGC' helps to:
- Develop children in aspects of personal, social, and emotional development.
- Enable children to become more informed and matured individuals with the ability to make decisions for themselves and a confidence that these decisions are right. But also taking responsibility for these decisions whether right or wrong.
- Create more well esteemed critical thinkers of children who can think laterally.
- Increase understanding of the different human rights and needs, and how important these are.
- Inform children about the complexity of our world and different issues. But also that it is our world and it is our responsibility to look after it.
