Interpretations of Creativity

Often the word creativity; or the act of being creative, can be interpreted in many different ways and can mean many different things. Creativity is all around us. Especially in this amazingly intricate, unique and incredibly detailed world we live in, all we have to do is look around and you can see it shining. But what is the real definition of creativity? And no I'm not talking about the Oxford Dictionary, (2014) definition: "The use of imagination or original ideas to create something; inventiveness". Although this is good, can we truly put creativity 'down to a tee' and state that it is just about imagination and being inventive?! Even then, people would argue it is not correct, as they might have experienced it differently in their life. Creativity can have such a differing impact on your life compared to another person. We all make up our own definitions of creativity!

So what does creativity mean to you?

We tried to address this within an 'Educational studies' lecture in my Uni. One cold dreary winters day, our lecturer told us (the whole year group) to take a sheet of paper and write down one or two words or a short sentence of what we thought it meant. We then had to screw it up and after three seconds throw it across the room. We then picked up a random paper ball near to us, unravelled it and shared some of the definitions we received. This was brilliant and made me realise that really... creativity is what we make of it! As all the definitions read out were different, and all had elements of individuality.

(This was the one I picked up)

So, if you think you aren't creative... think again. You might surprise yourself. Think to yourself day to day... "how could I be creative with this?", or, "how could I do this my own way?" Create room to express your natural creativity within your daily routine (often just by being yourself) and step into your potential to not only be a creative thinker but a creative do'er!
